CATEGORIES, AWARDS & RULES

 

Category A – 10 years old and younger

Requirements

  1. Contestants are free to play any style of music (classical, jazz, popular, old-time, ethnic).
  2. Maximum of 2 pieces to be performed, no time restrictions.
  3. Entry fee - $30

Awards:

I prize = $250; II prize = $150; III prize = $100. Each contestant in this category will get a Trophy.

 

 

Category B – 14 years old and younger

Requirements

  1. Contestants are free to play any style of music (classical, jazz, popular, old-time, ethnic).
  2. Minimum of 2 and maximum of 3 pieces to be performed, time limit 8 min.
  3. Entry fee - $30

Awards:

I prize = $300 + Trophy; II prize = $200; III prize = $100.

 

 

Category C (Classical) – 18 years old and younger

Requirements

  1. Contestants are free to play classical and contemporary pieces, including self-written ones that fit into classical or contemporary form.
  2. Minimum of 2 pieces to be performed, time limit 12 min.
  3. Entry fee - $30

Category D (Open) – 18 years old and younger

Requirements

  1. Contestants are free to play any style of music (jazz, popular, old-time, ethnic) except classical.

Category E (Classical) – no age restriction

Requirements

  1. Contestants are free to play classical and contemporary pieces, including self-written ones that fit into classical or contemporary form.
  2. Minimum of 2 pieces to be performed, time limit 15 min.
  3. Entry fee - $30

Awards:

I prize = $300 + Trophy; II prize = $200; III prize = $100.

 

 

Category F (Open) – no age restriction

Requirements

  1. Contestants are free to play any style of music (jazz, popular, old-time, ethnic) except classical.
  2. Minimum of 2 pieces to be performed, time limit 15 min.
  3. Entry fee - $30

I prize = $300 + Trophy; II prize = $200; III prize = $100.

 

 

Category G – 60+ (evaluation category)

Requirements

  1. Contestants are free to play any style of music (jazz, popular, old-time, ethnic, classical).
  2. Minimum of 2 pieces to be performed, time limit 12 min.
  3. Entry fee - $30

 

 

Category H (Ensembles) – no age restriction

Requirements

  1. Ensembles are free to play any style of music (jazz, popular, old-time, ethnic, classical).
  2. Minimum of 2 pieces to be performed, time limit 15 min.
  3. Entry fee - $20 per ensemble member.
  4. Ensemble is a group of two or more musicians with at least one acoustic accordion.

Awards:

I prize = $600; II prize = $300; III prize = $150.

 

Dollars expressed in Canadian currency.

 

 

COMPETITION RULES

  1. Competitors may enter as many categories as they qualify for, as long as they play different programs.
  2. Playing order will be determined by a random draw prior to beginning the competition.
  3. Entry forms must be postmarked no later than July 9, 2016. Victoria Accordion Competition Committee reserves right to accept late entries at its discretion.
  4. Categories with 3 entries or less are subject to review.
  5. Competitors must submit two printed copies of their program. Some exemptions apply, at organizers discretion.
  6. Any kind of acoustic accordion is acceptable: piano, chromatic, diatonic, bandoneon, concertina, free-bass.
  7. Discussion with adjudicators about competitor’s performance is forbidden until after category is completed. Competitor will be disqualified for violation of this procedure.
  8. Score sheets and remarks by adjudicators will be available to public after the competition is completed, upon request. Adjudicator’s decision is final and irrevocable.
  9. Any unauthorized recording (video or audio) or taking photos during the festival or competition is forbidden.
  10. The winners of each category will have to perform at the concert on July 31, 2016 in order to receive their awards and money prizes. This is obligatory or they risk forfeit to their prizes.
  11. The Organizing Committee declines any liability for accidents of any kind sustained by the competitors during the competition.
  12. Signing the Entry form entails the unconditional acceptance of Competition Rules.
